In her poem, Refinery Texas City, Georgia Pearle, talks about the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the petroleum industry in the bay.
In this letterpress layout, the refinery blueprint represents the process of crude oil. The “car” setting in this poem translates as the poet’s contributions to pollution and the petroleum industry. The red lines overlay the blueprint and reference traffic routes flowing north to south, representing Houston to Galveston.
The position of each couplet is intentional, creating a visual language whereby we move from narration in the car, at left, to what is seen and heard as we move towards the center, and the response of character in the poem, at right.
